Description:
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking a qualified applicant to function as an examiner in our Mitochondrial DNA Section. This grant-funded examiner will independently perform comprehensive scientific analyses on biological material including, but not limited to, hair, bone, and teeth submitted by law enforcement agencies. They will use knowledge of state of the art methodologies, techniques and instrumentation related to the analysis of Forensic Biology samples, interpret sequencing results and prepare reports of findings for use by the criminal justice system, prepare court exhibits, and testify in court as an expert witness.
 
Required qualifications: B.A./B.S. degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science or related scientific field; successful completion of course work required for a examiner/analyst by the FBI Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories; successful completion of a documented training program in forensic mitochondrial DNA analysis with individuals, agencies, or other laboratories in a program that includes methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used for forensic DNA analysis and their applications and limitations; a minimum of six months experience in forensic DNA PCR-based analysis; knowledge of laboratory safety and QA/QC procedures; ability to distinquish color differences, maintain accurate records, analyze and interpret data, manage multiple tasks efficiently, establish work priorities, and develop sound conclusions from analyses. Selected candidate must be eligible to possess valid driver’s license and/or have other means of reliable transportation.
 
Preferred qualifications: Experience preparing certificates of analysis with testimony as an expert witness in court; advanced degree in molecular biology or related discipline and forensic related teaching/training experience.
 
Selected candidates must provide a DNA sample via a buccal swab
(saliva sample), be fingerprinted and pass a security background check
