Virginia Division of Forensic Science
Breath Alcohol
The Breath Alcohol Section is responsible for training and licensing breath test operators and maintenance/certification of the evidential breath test equipment (Intoxilyzer 5000) used in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Department's Breath Test Program ensures that statewide quality assurance and operational standards are followed by the Commonwealth's law enforcement agencies when administering breath tests. To accomplish its goals, the Department of Forensic Science provides training, equipment, supplies, and laboratory support to local, state, and federal authorities. In addition to its responsibility for training and licensing operators, the Department certifies all evidential breath test instruments at least every six months.
