Mock Crime Scene Workshop - Forensic Science Academy Graduates Only - Richmond, VA 08/10/2020

Date(s): Monday, August 10th 2020 at 08:30 AM – Wednesday, August 12th 2020 at 05:00 PM

The purpose of this course is to review the knowledge, skills, and abilities attained during the Forensic Science Academy. It is designed for graduates who are at least three years removed from their attendance and are in positions that limit them from routinely utilizing the skills gained in the Academy. This three-day course will start with the students being dispatched to a homicide investigation for a full scene process. On day two, students will complete scaled diagrams of their scenes on their preferred software. For those of you who do not have sketching software, DFS will provide you a laptop with Microsoft® Visio 2010TM to complete this portion of the course. A Request for Laboratory Examination will also be completed on day two. Day three will be used for presenting the scene to the class and covering materials needed to enhance and improve the students techniques demonstrated the two days prior. Students should bring the equipment they utilize in the performance of their assignments to include photography and sketching gear, and packaging materials. Laptops must be brought to complete the post scene work required. If it is a practice to utilize a FARO® or Leica scanning device, it is allowed in the scene process but a finished sketch is still required and all participants must still generate a rough sketch of their scene by hand and manually measure evidence and their scene environment.

This course will be limited to 12 students and is restricted to personnel from Virginia law enforcement agencies who have graduated from the Forensic Science Academy.

The course will be taught by the Training Section. Day one will take place at The Virginia Public Safety Training Center located at 7093 Broad Neck Rd, Hanover, VA. Days two and three will be at the Virginia Department of Forensic Science’s Training Section located at 737 N. 5th Street in Richmond, VA. Class hours are from 8:30 A.M. to 5 P.M.
